Elephant GPS-collar and monitoring programme funded by the “Rettung bedrohter Wildtiere”

In 2018 our society “Rettung bedrohter Wildtiere e.V.” funded, by means of membership subscriptions and donations, an elephant GPS collar as well as a three-year monitoring program to the tune of 5,045 US$.
This will go a long way towards understanding elephants’ spatial patterns as well as allowing management to continuously monitor the animals’ movements. The entire unit including batteries weighs in at about 16 kg.
Knowing that the elephants are being monitored may be enough of a deterrent against poachers (also check out the report: “Publicity for ELECollars”).
Sadly, and with devastating effects, poaching for ivory and rhino horn has reached an unprecedented high in recent years. However, in many instances poachers can be stopped in their tracks by well-trained anti-poaching units able to respond fast to any incursion, which in turns necessitates effective means of communication such as GPS, mobile phones, drones, binoculars as well as having enough boots on the ground in the areas of operation.

Your donation will help to make a difference in our efforts of protecting and saving wild animals.
