Annual Report of the Bumi Hills Anti-poaching unit 2022

Annual Report 2022

For several years we have been supporting the anti-poaching unit in the Bumi Hills at the Kariba Lake in Zimbabwe. This has 2 main tasks:

1. fight against the poaching of mammals. This form of poaching is mainly done by setting wire snares. The animals are cruelly killed, seriously injured or mutilated by these snares. Elephant poaching for ivory is on the decline, but one has to be on the lookout every day.

2. fight against fish poaching through the use of banned plastic nets. These nets have meshes that are far too small. Fish fry are also taken through them. Since the nets do not dissolve over time, they can float around in the lake for decades as ghost nets and cause endless animal suffering.
